“At the beginning I almost couldn’t believe it; no school? A holiday? Life is good!! On that day I got home at 3.30 pm, hurriedly took off my uniform, cleaned it at the double, I wasn’t going to be needing it anyway till further notice.“
As the coronavirus brings a standstill to movements, academic activities in schools and deterioration in the economy, the standstill in socialization poses a great disadvantage to homes that rely on charity for sustenance. In Dagoreti Constituency, Nairobi, things are no different for most children homes, community schools and rescue centers. Today, we will highlight the fantastic work Positive Action Kenya is doing to help provide access to food for children and youths hosted in centres within Dagoreti.
Positive Action Kenya (PAK) is a youth-led NGO that focuses on empowering youths from disadvantaged backgrounds by harnessing their talents and skills. They help support access to education, training and leadership development through three core functions that include;
* Promotion of wholesome education in children homes and schools through three clubs. These clubs facilitate Business & Entrepreneurship, Creative Arts and Sports sessions.
* Provision of higher-education learning opportunities to outstanding students by through scholarship offers
* Construction of libraries across the country.
In the wake of COVID-19, PAK took up the task of raising funds to provide food supplies, academic materials and sanitary products for 243 children and youths. These children and youths are hosted at Cheryl’s Children Home, Hidden Talent Academy and Mary Faith Rescue Center for Abused Girls. In April, through supporters on their Covid-19 Relief for vulnerable kids account, PAK was able to purchase 300+ kilograms of food supplies. These food supplies comfortably fed the children and youths in these three homes for a month!
Encouraged by the immense support from their donors, PAK readjusted their goal and decided to add more centres to their list of beneficiaries. With the continued support, through financial and in-kind donations, they were able to target more homes and centres to impact a total of 388 individuals in May. In June, they hope to impact many more kids further.
