“When I think back to my journey I am really grateful that my late mum encouraged me to go for therapy because I now know firsthand how important therapy is when healing from trauma. ” Adelle Onyango.
“Yesterday marked the last day of the 16 Days of Activism against gender based violence campaign. The campaign carried the theme #OrangetheWorld and aimed to create awareness on the different types of violence affecting women not only in Kenya but around the globe.
It is estimated that 57% of women experience violence in their life time. In Kenya alone, 47% of women and girls between the age of fifteen and forty are victims of sexual, physical or work place violence. This high numbers are a plea for working reporting systems, effective after care rehabilitation and health care access to the affected victims.
In an effort to ensure that women access the care and rehabilitation they require for recovery, the Carolina for Kibera and Adelle Onyango Initiative have partnered to provide girls and women affected by rape a safe haven. The safe haven comes in the form of a FREE group therapy program and support group dubbed Safe 24/7 Group Therapy Program
For many, therapy has played a huge role in recovery from trauma. It is however unfortunate that many other survivors cannot access therapy because of how expensive it is. Through the Safe 24/7 program, 30 survivors will be able to access therapy sessions once a week for ten weeks. These sessions will be facilitated by trained counselors and psychologists.
In addition to the therapy sessions the girls will receive a toolkit that they can use even after the program. The toolkit will contain coping mechanisms for their use. An additional fifty survivors will be part of a support group. The support group will help ensure the survivors do not walk the journey of healing alone. To enable them fully concentrate on their healing the funds raised will also ensure the girls are provided for transport to and from the venue in Kibera.
If 4,000 of us come together and donate Kes 350 ($3.5) each Safe 24/7 will be a reality. Join us in ensuring that a girl is safe 24 hours a day 7 days a week by sending your contribution to PAY BILL: 891300 ACCOUNT NO: 36348. To donate via credit card click on this link- Safe 24/7.
