‘To give a smile to a society that lost hope ‘- LOCA
Waliuba Gilbert’s review on Love for the Child Association’s Facebook page reads, ‘Oceans were built up from the tiny water drops that once fell long ago’. This was in 2017. Two years later, we can all witness the ocean of love Love of the Child Association (LOCA) has turned into.
LOCA is a Kenyan charity based organisation started on 16th March, 2015 by a group of young people passionate about the community. The founders of the group were brought together by a common promise to change the society positively by impacting the underprivileged members of the society. They now do this by transforming the lives of the needy through scholarship, mentorship, and donation of basics needs.
Consistently visiting a home once every two months, LOCA has reached more than twenty homes in and around Nairobi. During this visits the team, together with its volunteers and supporters, go out of there way to not only share love but also share food stuffs, sanitary supplies, clothes and cooked meals. They also honor specific requests such as mattresses, water tanks, storage facilities and toys in homes with children. LOCA currently have eighty registered members and a further seventy supporters.
To ensure sustainability in provision for the individuals in this homes they empower them with skills they can use to earn income. Some of their skill development activities include mat making and weaving. LOCA also cover communal development. This is evident from their visit in Namitu Nkera Rescue Home in Kajiado this April. Together with their supporters, the helped the community members build and repair their toilets, beds and classrooms.
As Marian Wright Edelman says Education is for improving the lives of others and for leaving your community and world better than you found it, LOCA is also making the world a better place through education. They do this through the LOCA Elimu Scholarship program. By making a monthly donation of 100 shillings, you help keep a needy student in school. The LOCA scholarship programm has also assisted two needy students with fully paid scholarships to secondary school. The scholarship fully funds their four years of secondary education.
As we all came together to share love, the Love for the Child Association account on M-Changa was able to raise KES 2,284,560. This is through their amazing 445 virtual supporters.
“Charity is not done by the rich nor the poor,
its neither done by the strong nor weak;
charity is done by the heart that has love and
that knows its a privilege to live.”
